At the New Zealand Planning Institute Awards, held on 2-3 May, the Christchurch City Council was awarded the Best Practice Award: Strategic Planning and Guidance for the Draft Central City Recovery Plan. This is a cutting edge planning document outlining a vision and future for the central city. Abley Transportation Consultants and other consultants attending the award ceremony were singled out for recognition for their contribution to the plan.

Peter won the New Zealand Automobile Association Award for producing the Best Technical Paper presented at the IPENZ Transportation Group Conference, Rotorua, 2012. Peter was the lead author of the paper titled “Optimising Bridge Asset Management”. This is a highly regarded award and was presented by the IPENZ Transportation Group Chairman, Mark Apeldoorn. Our Laura Bates presented a paper co-written with Steve Abley entitled “Creating a better public transport system even when the ‘C’ is taken out of ‘CBD’” at the 2012 IPENZ Transportation Group Conference held in Rotorua, 18-21 March. This paper was awarded as Highly Commended. Laura’s presentation also won the people’s choice best presentation award on Monday 19 March by an overwhelming margin. Well done Laura! The Canterbury Business Leader Group spokesman, Dr Don Elder comments on Abley Transportation Consultants in the Mainland Press with regards to businesses remaining committed. He states "Abley Transportation Consultants Ltd, for example, has become a key transportation partner for the city. Following the February earthquake, it has helped the University of Canterbury implement a temporary shuttle service that enabled the latter to keep students in the region. We are very pleased to announce that Dave Smith will start with Abley Transportation Consultants as a Principal Transportation Planner on 27 February. Dave has a wealth of experience as a strategic transport modeller. His skills and knowledge will complement and strengthen the existing micro-simulation, intersection and accessibility modelling capabilities within Abley. Dave is also experienced in economic evaluation, crash analysis, land use development, parking studies and traffic surveys.

This comprehensive report replaces the old Transfund Research Report 209. Report 209 was a solid reference document for the transport planning industry and this updated report, now titled research report 453 'Trips and parking related to land use', revises the original report updating it to 2010 and comparing New Zealand results with those reported in the UK, USA and Australia. It also reviews trip generation surveys and databases from these four countries. The research report can be downloaded here.

Our Stacy Rendall has recently had a paper published in the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRB). The TRB is a United States based organisation whose mission is to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research. Stacy's paper is titled Quantifying Transport Energy Resilience Active Mode Accessibility and is about the built environment and the transport infrastructure of a specific urban form. This research report was produced by Abley on behalf of NZTA. The report utilises data held within the New Zealand Household Travel Survey (NZHTS), in order to examine changes in travel behaviour between 2003 and 2010. It sought to determine whether travel behaviours such as journey times, mode choice, trip complexity and trip generation rates differed by area type and region. A key aim of the research was to unlock further value from the data for the benefit of transport planners and engineers.
